Pain during sex – women

Pelvic pain, dyspareunia, vaginismus, vulvodynia

Many women can experience pain during sex and painful sex can occur for a number of reasons.

There are a number of conditions that come under the umbrella of ‘sexual pain’ conditions, also known as ‘Genito-Pelvic Pain/Penetration Disorders’ in the psychiatric DSM classification.

These are some of the names that are given to various ‘painful sex’ difficulties:

  • Vaginismus
  • Vulvodynia
  • Vulvar Vestibulitis
  • Dyspareunia (painful intercourse)

I am not particularly interested in current psychiatric classifications of ‘disorders’. However, I AM interested in hearing about your particular experience in order to help you and your partner.

As a medically trained sex therapist with over 20 years’ experience in this field I am experienced in assessing the reasons for a woman’s experience of pain during sex or sexual arousal. Following an efficient yet detailed conversation regarding your experience, I am able to physically assess you if I think this is appropriate and if you are happy for this assessment.

Sometimes ‘sex related’ pain requires a specialist opinion (e.g. a gynaecologist, dermatologist or pelvic physiotherapist). I am able to advise you about this possible need.

I am also always keen to liaise with your own GP about their assessment of your symptoms. This process of collaboration can open up a very positive path toward improvement of your symptoms and your sexual experiences with your partner.

I have practical solutions at hand to help you. This includes physical techniques I can instruct you on as well as hypnosis and relaxation processes. I can also refer you to a specialist whenever I believe this would be of benefit.

If you find the help you have sought to date is not progressing despite 100% commitment in time and effort on your part, then a second opinion is always warranted.

Please do yourself and your partner a favour – take action now and seek help for your ‘painful sex’ problems.
